Beach day at Lake Tahoe

Hi friends!

I can’t believe we’re in September! This summer has been very slow and restful, which is exactly what I wished for in Spring. I didn’t intentionally aim for a slow summer, but after some lifestyle changes, I’m becoming more aware of the signals my body gives off when I’m under stress. I’m also less likely to push through lack of rest now that I’ve had a taste of what it feels like to fully recharge. My productivity level increases. My body is less likely to get injured or sick. My emotions are less heavy. MAYBE this is my new character development! Being able to let go of the need to be constantly productive, and to feel bored. I haven't felt bored in a very long time. My life changes very quickly, or should I say, I change my life very often. I like to push myself outside of my comfort zone because I’m inspired by changes. But too many new changes at once can be a lot to process, so now I’m only adding 1-2 new things at a time, while simultaneously removing things that no longer fit, so that I can be fully present for changes.

I had a weekend getaway in Lake Tahoe with some friends a week ago. It was also my cat Shibu’s first roadtrip. Not gonna lie, it was quite stressful getting him outside. I took him to the beach one morning and he was the star - mainly because he was crying so much 😂 I still had a great time soaking in the sun. Even though it wasn’t a “real” beach (in Vietnamese, the word “beach” translates to “ocean”), I still appreciated the sand, the waves, and the clear water. My tropical blood has been yearning for this!

I took a break from posting on here for a few weeks to enjoy the rest of the summer BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS. Yes, I’m officially a part-time student this Fall! There’s gonna be new knowledge, new people, and new weekday activities. I’m kinda excited for this new development in my life. I’m not sure where this class will take me, but I’m grateful to have the time and energy to follow my curiosity.

Cheers to end of summer!

Culture

Icarus (2017)

Netflix

I’m a huge fan of documentaries, and have spent many years watching all kinds of documentaries. I haven’t came across a documentary that can keep my attention. Many docs recycle the same storytelling recipe, and can be repetitive or predictable.

I recently watched Icarus, which is a documentary on doping in professional cycling, and was blown away by the story. The doping part is just the first layer of the story. If you’re into sports, geopolitics, war criminals, and political scandals - this is the doc for you.

Makeup

triangle foundation brush

PICCASSO FB21 Foundation Brush

I actually don’t use makeup brushes often. I prefer to use products that can be distributed by hands, but I do reach for a few brushes when I want to do more than just tinted sunscreen + concealer + blush + mascara. I own a few makeup brushes from Piccasso and I’m pretty impressed by their quality. I recently replaced my Sephora foundation brush with this one from Piccasso, and I love how easy it is to cover all the crevices underneath my eyes and around my nose. It’s also not super dense, so you can build up your foundation gradually. It’s a little pricey compared to other brushes, but I think it’s a great investment!

Music

I came across TRANG’s museic 10 years ago when she was a budding artist in the underground Vietnamese pop scene. Then life took many turns and I stepped away from Vietnamese music for a while. When I came across this song, I’m reminded by a younger version of TRANG - and of me. Her sound is still as refreshing and healing as before, but there’s a veil of sophistication that came with age and life experiences. The bossa vibes also makes this the perfect end-of-summer tune 💕

What is a song that can bring you back to a specific time in your life?
